BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina has recognized several South Carolina hospitals with a Blue Distinction Center for Maternity Care designation as part of the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program. Blue Distinction Centers are nationally designated hospitals that show expertise in delivering improved patient safety and better health outcomes, based on objective measures that were developed with input from the medical community. Carolinas Hospital System has been recognized as a Blue Distinction Center+ for quality and cost.

“We are delighted and proud to receive the Blue Distinction Center + for Maternity Care”, said Costa Cockfield, Chief Nursing Officer. “This national designation recognizes our commitment to delivering safe, patient-centered care to our mothers and their newborns. Our physicians, nurses and staff are committed to following the latest evidence-based practices for maternal and infant care, and do this both skillfully and compassionately.”

Since 2006, the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program has helped patients find quality specialty care in several areas including cancer care, cardiac care, maternity care, knee and hip replacements, spine surgery and transplants, Research shows that, compared to other hospitals, those designated as Blue Distinction Centers demonstrate better quality and improved outcomes for patients.

“I would like to thank every member of the Women’s Center and Carolinas Hospital System for their uncompromising standards and pursuit of excellence to really show the Carolinas Difference,” said Catherine F. Godwin, Director of Women’s Services. “We are grateful to Blue Cross and Blue Shield for recognizing our talented and dedicated staff members who are committed to exceptional patient care and quality service.”
